How fast do I have to push my 2005 MBz to get the auto transmission to turn the engine fast enough to start?

Phillip S asked:

With a tired battery and infrequent driving, can I get enough momentum by coasting down a hill to get the engine to start by dropping the transmission into LOW gear?

Probably not. Usually, you can only Push Start a standard transmission. I don't know why, exactly, but I've done it literally hundreds of times, and popping the clutch to engage the transmission at exactly the right moment is usually the key to a successful start. With an automatic, you don't have control over the clutch.

Very bad idea, you will only damage the transmission on the car
not get it started. U can only jump start cars that have manual
transmissions in them, this is hard on the clutch. Your best bet
is to purchase a battery booster or a New battery.

you cannot start a car with an auto transmission by pushing it- there is a torque converter or some such thing that only wokrs from the engine to the drivetrain but uses fluid rather than a direct gear mechanism that does not allow enough friction for the physical motion of the wheels to turn the crankshaft connected to the engine to priduce the spark needed to began combustion ...

I can push my beetle, jump in it and pop the clutch on a flat surface by myself. And I'm no spring chicken at 49. But I just noticed you have an automatic. Coasting down hill shouldn't be a problem for you to get it started, just be sure the key is turned to it's running position when you put it in gear. Won't start if its not on, no matter the speed. But a car like yours you need to maintain. Check the belts because your battery should last longer than a year, even with infrequent use. Good luck to you whatever you do.

This will not work, MB removed the rear pump from their automatic transmissions in the 90's. The rear pump made it possible to push strat the vehicle.

It doesn't matter how fast you push it. The transmission will not do a thing without the pump working, and the pump doesn't work until the engine is running thus spinning the pump. The older vehicles that had a rear pump, and would start by pushing them, but they haven't made any like this in years.
Glad I could help. Good Luck!!!
