Randy W asked:
What is your experience?
Is it better to buy four winter tires?
Is it better to buy rims for all the tires or simply have them switched each season
Thank you for your thoughts

i would switch them so you keep them in nice shape in the winter just go get some blizzaks for like 200 bucks kee p the rims and tires clean and nice!
i would buy cheap rims for the tires... its easier than paying the 100$ fee to switch them..
and change them your self in thedriveway.
Buy four studded snow tires if you can.
Despite what anyone says..
they ARE the best.
Good luck.
We always buy four winter tires. It gets very dangerous here where we live with all the bad winter weather.
it is best to buy 2 tires and put them on your drive wheels. if you can afford 2 rims, that is the easiest. then all you have to do is change the wheel, which is a lot easier and cheaper than switching the tires on the rims twice a year.
I think it all depends on where you live. Do they salt the roads heavily or barley at all. Do you have $$$$ fancy rims? If you have nice shinny chrome rims of them big flashy 20" rims I would swap them out for some stockers or cheaper rims and either snow tires or all season tires.
Amymore with the performance of all season tires. If you keep them inflated properly and they have an adequite ammount of tread you should be fine. My father in law used to have two sets of rims and tires. but he stopped doing that when the radials came about.
You can perform a quick check on tread depth. Take a lincon Penny and place him head down in a grove if the treat is above his head you should be ok if you can see the top of his head you need new tires.
To find proper tire inflation information look on your sidewall it will be right there. should be right around 35psi.
My experience is: Buy 4 tires. Buy the tallest narrowest tires that your vehicle will allow. This puts the maximum weight per square inch in the road. Buy rims if you intend to keep the same car for a few years to save mounting and balancing costs and perhaps your aluminium or chrome wheels. Avoid all season tires. I like aggressive tread that is siped. Some of the newer tires with the oddball sizes are expensive. You may use a smaller 14 inch steel wheel with a taller tire to match a low profile 15 or 16 inch wheel. That can save you money. You do want to end up with the same circumference to keep your speedo and other electrical components happy.
My experience is well, enough. You should always go with 4 snows due to braking and acceleration issues. Swapping tires leads to premature bead wear sometimes causing leaks around the bead or tire failure.Go to a yard for steel wheels(the same size) to put the snows on. You are welcome.
Its best to have four extra rims and four winter tires, the new Blizzaks outperform studded winter tires. Check below for some winter tire tech articles.
Winter tires should ONLY be purchased as sets of 4. Winter tires have very different driving characteristics to summer tires and the level of grip in snow and ice conditions is so dramatically better than even the best all-season tire that mixing the two types on one vehicle can actually make you more likely to be in a serious accident. On a FWD vehicle for instance if you have winter tires on the front axle and all-season tires on the rear axle those rear tires can start floating on top of the snow and ice while your front tires are gripping just fine. This will result in a sudden and usually uncontrollable spin.
It is always best to have winter tires mounted on their own rims. More expense up front but it saves time and money down the road, not to mention wear and tear on the tire beads.
