Competition in office?

I have a coworker, he is in better position than me, we both have the same growth path.Many times i have observerd that this person is trying to degrade my image in front of other seniors by publishing the small things by creating the hype. I think, he is not insecure because of me, but when i talk to him for any discussion, i felt that he doesn't want to cooperate. I am not sure, is that just my mind, which is feeling insecure, so i am blaming him, or I should take it as a challange. My goal is to have the right approach and the right competion. Is that good, i should work hard and get more understanding than him , to come and proof myself.Please suggest me the right way, so i will not be baised for his rigth things.

Your co-worker is threatened by you, for sure. He is insecure.

Take the high road!! Do not engage in his behavior of degrading him in front of others - it's petty and will hurt your image. Any snide remarks he says will be taken at face value. If there were any cause for concern based on what he said, your managers will address you directly.

Trust me, your higher-ups are wise to these tactics. They've seen it before, and don't look favorably on it.

Instead, use your face-time with your managers to highlight your accomplishments - not brag, mind you, but simply point out any process improvements you've implemented, or simply update them on your progress with a major project. Huge bonus points to you if you can credit him for anything he may have assisted you on (it makes you look like a team player and therefore a more valuable asset to the company!)

I've been in this position. Use his need to compete to inspire you to do a better job. Stay positive and don't let him bring you down!!
